an excerpt
Elyse had never considered herself strange. She had grown as every other female had grown for the past five hundred years. She was born, given an identifying code number based on gender and birth date. 2, she had learned how to speak and walk. She was given her laptop when she was 3. She was taught how to type in txtspk, and read by 4. By her 5th birthday her computer began to wake her up at 6 hours to attend school: a friendly woman on screen would talk and type the lesson simultaneously in a class chat located under the teacher's window. The class would participate in class discussions, ask and answer questions by a class chat, and a webcam monitored by the teacher would ensure the student paid full attention to the screen. By the time she was 8, her mother began to teach her the household chores, and her new classes online revolved around them. Proper vacuum and dusting and cooking techniques; everything needed for her to grow to be the ideal housewife. When she was 11, community volunteer work was added to her daily list, along with a baby brother to help take care of. At 14, her makeup was tattooed on, and she was permitted to baby-sit for community service volunteer work. Now she was 16, and knew that she would continue her current schedule until she was 18 and given a home. The following year, 19, she would meet her future husband and begin the year-long process of courting, at 20 she would marry him and he would move in with her. And if she passed the Standardized Good Parental Skills test at 22, she would have children. No, Elyse had never considered herself strange…but now, after her dream, she began to wonder.
