Brief Author Bio:

I'm a creative writing student at London Metropolitan University. This is my first attempt at a novel, but I'm hoping it will help me get some ideas together for my dissertation. i'm really interested in the history of the 20th Century especially the Spanish Civil War and Second World War, and how these events tie into philosophical and political development, especially the relationship between existentialism and socialism. I'm hoping all these elements will come together in my novel, which is also about obsession, unrequited love, and the search for authenticity in an absurd world.

Synopsis:

Paris, 1937: Kurt Haber, a gifted young philosopher and contributer to the growing continental existentialist movement, is becoming increasingly obsesssed with his brilliant, cruel mentor, who delights in intellectually humiliating and sexually leading on his student. When the Spanish Civil War breaks out, Haber is convinced he must be true to his philosophy of personal responsibility and goes to fight the Fascist forces, joining the International Brigade and travelling to Spain. Wounded and exhausted, he risks great personal danger to return to occupied France to see his tutor - only to find that the professor has renounced his philosophy of radical freedom, has married, and is in full collaboration with the Nazi regime. Seeing his world shatter around him, everything he put faith in revealed to be meaningless, and hunted by the Vichy police force as a Jew, a homosexual and a communist sympathiser, Kurt makes a decision - the only one that can allow him a moment of true authenticity amongst the ruins of his philosophy.
