Undecided
an excerpt

It was a Tuesday, and like every other Tuesday, Chris was heading to his car to make the trip from school to work, only this time he was greeted by a familiar face.
“Hey, Kaya.” He greeted as he gave her a hug. She was leaning up against his car, arms folded, head slightly tilted downward.
“Hey, Chris,” she replied, “can I talk to you about something? It’s kind of important.”
“Of course you can, what’s going on?”
“I’m…” Kaya trailed off, her voice a bit shaky.
“You’re what?”
“I’m pregnant, Chris. I’m pregnant.” She sighed.
“Hey! That’s great! I thought something bad had happened. Wow, pregnant! Congratulations to you and Tyler, I’m real happy for you guys!”
“No, Chris. You don’t understand…”
“Don’t understand what?”
Kaya lifted her head, and locked yes with her older brother. She raised her eyebrows a little, giving him that look. The one that suggests he should know what she’s talking about.
“Kaya, no.” He protested, finally realizing what she was on about.
“I’m going to do it Chris. Come on, Tyler and I can’t even afford to take care of ourselves, let alone a kid!”
“But Kaya, think of the risks! This isn’t 2005 anymore, you can’t just go running off and getting an abortion whenever and wherever the fuck you please!”
“Keep it down, Chris, don’t you think I don’t know the risks?” She scolded him in a harsh whisper, glancing around quickly to make sure no one had over heard them.
“Then what the hell are you thinking? You could seriously get hurt if you plan on going through with this.”
“That’s a risk I’m going to have to take. We can’t afford to take care of this kid, Chris. We just can’t.”
“Then have it and put it up for adoption or something, for christs sake Kaya, don’t go getting an abortion.” He grabbed her by the shoulders and looked her in the eyes, trying desperately to search for the reasoning behind what he saw as madness.
“I’m going to do it. There’s no changing my mind. Tyler is behind me one-hundred percent, and I want your support too. Please, just give me that much. Please.”
“Kaya, I can’t. I really can’t.” He took his arms from her shoulders and began fiddling with the lock to the drivers side door. She grabbed him by the wrist and pleaded.
“Chris, you’re my older brother. You’re the only family I have left since mom’s been gone. I’d really like to have your support in this.”
“Look, Kaya,” he started, pulling her hand off his arm, “I know you want my support. But your life is at risk with this, and like you said, we’re eachothers only family now. I don’t know what I would do if I lost you. I can’t stop you from doing what you want, you’re an adult, but I don’t support your decision. There’s other ways to deal with this that aren’t risky. Call me if you change your mind.” With that, Chris popped open the drivers side door, got in and took off to work, leaving Kaya alone in the empty parking space.
“So much for family…” Kaya muttered as she turned and began to head home.
