Emily Jean stood on the stoop in front of the Eaton Rapids train station and watched the river, where it ran behind the town’s factories. The water wound itself around the stilts that held up the backsides of the old buildings. It sifted through the algae that had accumulated along the water level. The water was low, had been for some time, and the current had slowed to match the pace of everything else in the town.
