Excerpt: Sinclair of Twin Earth: Williams life part 2

William smelt the blood before he came into the apartment. Was there anything he could do if he smelt this much? He entered the apartment expecting to find a scene that matched a horror film but saw nothing of the sort. Instead it was a small, well kept apartment with tasteful furnishings. Many of the objects were expensive and made of wood, but built to last. These things were rare on the planet. If he had the time William would’ve admired the furnishings but in the rush he was in he took a mental photograph and followed Miss Blossom through to the back room where William almost gagged, but pushed through.
In a bloody corner of the room Grunge sat, his head lolled off to one side, a pair of scissors jutted out from his stomach. Miss Blossom began to cry as William rushed to Grunge’s side, analyzing the situation. “Get me some towels Miss Blossom.” He ordered in a steady voice as he pulled Grunge’s arms away from where he was holding the scissors.
“I fell.” Grunge grunted as William felt around the blades.
“No need to lie to me Grunge. You did this to yourself.” William said coldly.
Grunge smiled and swallowed hard. “Don’t tell her.”
“Of course not.”
“It hurts Will. I’ve hurt for a long time.” He turned to look at William. “Please kill me.” He whispered, his eyes glittering. “I knew how you were the best and I’ve longed for your fangs.”
William was taken aback. For a moment he wasn’t sure what to do. He stared at Grunge as Miss Blossom came back into the room. William stood and turned to her. With a small gesture he led her out of the room. “I’m sorry but he is too far gone, even if I was fully prepared how I should.” He lowered his head and looked at his blood covered hands. Closing his eyes he whispered again, “I’m sorry.”
Miss Blossom grasped his hands. William looked up to the face of a woman whom he never knew the first name to. She smiled through her tears. “We both knew this day was coming. I never wanted to admit it but it’s true.” She sobbed. “Please put him out of his misery Dr. Fletcher.”
“But I...”
“Tear out his throat.” She smiled as a fresh set of tears ran down her face. “I don’t have the money to have him put down with meds, just enough to send him away to get incinerated.”
William nodded and squeezed her hands before walking away from her and into that small room, closing the door behind him. In the dark Grunge and Will looked at each other. Finally Grunge sighed and closed his eyes. With the precision and speed of a trained fighter, Will raced forth and plunged his teeth on his throat. With a crunch of bone the older half breed fell limp onto the ground. As he unhinged his jaws he laid Grunge to the floor, tears coming unwillingly from his eyes. While neither of them was close, but Grunge was one of his patients and was sorry to see him go, especially this way.
When Will stepped out of the room Miss Blossom was waiting for him. A look was all it took and she knew. “He used to be a fighter. My father was the true owner but he wanted to protect me so he came to this dome. A bit of him died that day we moved here, another part died when the fights were outlawed. He always wanted to die by another’s tooth. He wanted it this way.” She sniffed. “Please clean yourself in the kitchen. I should start to make arrangements.”
