Synopsis: The Night Prince
Messed-up people in a creepy old castle - but with style! It's like "Wuthering Heights" but the angst is louder.
Excerpt: The Night Prince
John laughed sadly at the ceiling.
“To be a ruler requires a degree of compassion,” he said. “And I’ve yet to see Julian care about anyone besides himself and -”
Suddenly, Claudette burst through the doorway. Like a mad town crier, she bellowed out the hour. John, Margaret, and Lucia broke their exchange and skittered about, quickly putting the dinner together. The moment that Claudette was satisfied with the state of the dinner trays, she marched Margaret up the stairs. John and Lucia were left alone with the crackling of the fire and the bubbling of the pots.
Lucia drew a breath. John quickly spoke over her.
“The point is, Lucia, that the late king was quite well liked. If he was to be murdered, people should instantly suspect a stranger. I myself initially thought that it was someone from without.”
“But in truth,” Lucia said, feeling something of an alarm rise up inside her, “the culprit was someone from within this very town.”
John nodded gravely. He leaned in close to her ear as Margaret had and whispered:
“Someone from this very family.”
