Granted Wish
an excerpt
Sach is just a normal griffin, a student at a nearby boarding school, but on the last day of school before summer break...
Sach shouldered his backpack again, struggling to lift it onto his light frame. “Yeah, sorry, I guess I can’t. But I’ll be there tonight, so I’ll just drop my stuff off at home—“ Sach cut off his sentence instantly. He stared, stood absolutely still, mouth slightly agape. He said nothing for a brief moment, and Hira broke the silence.
“…Something wrong, Sach?” What’s wrong with him? Maybe he’s just spacing?
“…I…I…I don’t…remember…where I live.”
What kind of stupid game is this? Hira was getting annoyed again. “Don’t play dumb, just go drop off your stuff and let’s get going, you’re wasting our time.”
“I’m serious. I don’t remember.” Sach’s words were too hard to believe. There was only one explanation. “Don’t lie so that you can have fun, that’s just being stupid and irresponsible, okay? You may be smart, but you’re still pretty dumb in my book if you think we’d fall for that.” Tor and Sulia said nothing, and expected Sach to drop the act.
But he persisted. “I can’t remember anything about my parents either. Or my family. Or anything.”
His personality was off, and he started to do things differently.
His friends Hira, Sulia and Tor stay with him until he can remember, staying at
Hira's house until...
Sach trudged up the stairs, got ready, and practically collapsed into bed. He was in a deep sleep only ten minutes later.
His dream wasn’t really that vivid that night, but then again, it hasn’t been recently. All it’s ever been was walking on a sidewalk, tripping, and falling into a pit. And tonight wasn’t anything special. But he was thinking about his dream tonight! That’s special! Aren’t you supposed to wake up when you realize you’re dreaming?
Okay, then. I must know if it works! On the count of three…one…two…thr-
A loud explosion woke Sach up. He sat up instantly, staring into the darkness, barely making out the outline of Sulia still asleep, and Hira trying to wake her up frantically. Tor was staring out of a lighted window. Sach could hear panic just outside. He got up, bounded past Sulia, who had just started stirring, and looked out the window at the towers of flames and mass of people fleeing.
As things become complicated, it becomes difficult to sort through memories and promises. But in the end, whose wish is it that will be granted?
