an excerpt
I love my father, I really do. He’s done the very best he can with me. And it’s not like I think it would be easy to be him. He’s a really, really great human being. I actually think the universe played a very funny trick giving me to him. I really try to make it easier by cooperating with his stuffy view of the world, but sometimes it’s really hard.
“How was your date?”
“Okay. Well, actually, it was fine until we broke up. That part sucked.”
“Oh.” I watch him squirm for a minute. He has no idea what to say to me. “That’s too bad.”
“Well, I guess... You always told me that football stars are kind of dense. But don’t worry. There will be no more men.”
“Oh.” His face gets squished a bit and he clears his throat. “Like Auntie Lily no more men?” Auntie Lily is my mother’s sister. She’s a surgeon. She travels all over the world doing free surgeries for poor children. She’s also a lesbian.
“I don’t know yet. I don’t think you can just switch on a homosexual switch, Jefferson. But I haven’t had time to think about it much. Anyway, I need to go upstairs and pack.”
“Ah. Okay.” He fiddles with his tie. It’s not unusual that he’s still wearing his button up shirt with a tie. When I was smaller I thought he slept in them.
“Well. Don’t stay up too late. It’ll be a big day tomorrow. Long flight. And we need to have a chat before you go to your mother’s.”
“I won’t stay up too late.” I hug him. “And I’ll reserve enough time for your Hilde lecture.” His eyebrows raise. “I love you, Dad.”
“I love you too, Sophie.”
