"I object!" said Brick.

"Oh come on, don't be so literal. And didn't you read the part where it said 'she muttered'? Serves you right for eavesdropping when I'm talking to myself."

"You were talking out loud!"

"I was muttering, which is kind of like the whole point, hello?"

"Whatever."

Thus you can more or less gauge the maturity of our lovely heroine and her companions. You'll have to read on to discover whether or not I'm being sarcastic about her loveliness.
