Synopsis: The Library (very tentative working title)

In 1816, the Higgins siblings have lost a father but gained a legacy. Namely, the Library of Mysteries and Secrets, a concealed society that harbours the truth about everything, such as the fact that Gryphons exist in the South of England and the East of Africa, not to mention the Mermaids in the Pacific and Indian Oceans (though it is far too cold for them in the Atlantic), and of course, the mysteries of the human psyche itself.

Edmund, the eldest son, is struggling to come to terms with his new sense of responsibility, but when his younger siblings are taken by a shady stranger working for an even shadier organisation, he realises that he must embrace his place in the world and use the resources the library has to offer to save both his family, and the secret world he has come to cherish.

William is a man that has seen and done too much. His belief is all he has, but when his path crosses that of the Higgins, he finds himself caught up in a perilous journey that threatens not only his life, but his very morals. Has he been following the wrong cause all his life?

Excerpt: The Library (very tentative working title)

Taken from Chapter One: Under the Streets of London.

The lamplight grew sparse the deeper they walked into the cavern, until it seemed that the only available light came from the lamps the two men themselves were grasping. The echo of their footsteps grew louder, and Ed realised that the walls, which had been so oppressively close all the way down were not moving further and further away.

Ed lifted his lamp, trying to get a better look at his surroundings. The corridor had widened into a large round cavern, with several other passages leading off in various directions. He had already mused on the possibility of getting lost down here, but now the enormity of the underground system hit him square in the gut and he realised just how dire that situation would be. It was a labyrinth down here, and if he had come down without Harry for a guide, he had no doubt that he would be wandering this underground prison until his death.

“Right,” Harry said now that they were apparently where they were supposed to be. “Now we need to make a lot of noise.”

Ed looked down at the younger man and blinked. “Excuse me?”

Harry did not seem to be affected by Ed’s tone. In fact, the blonde man looked quite cheerful. “Gryphon’s are curious creatures. Instead of being scared off by the noise, they instinctively run towards it.”

“Of course they run towards it!” Ed shouted, now completely and utterly convinced that Harry Day was a raving lunatic. “They can tell that 'it' is where the food is. And I don’t know if this needs to be pointed out to you, Harry, but in this scenario the food would be us!”

“That’s the spirit!” Harry said, patting Ed on the back with the hand that wasn’t holding the Grimoire. “But perhaps just a little bit LOUDER!”

Ed stared aghast as Harry started screaming at the top of his lungs. He was trying to determine the best course of action – a punch to the ribs or the eye socket? – when he heard the very thing he didn’t want to hear. That loud, soul-destroying screech that was half bird squawk, half lion roar. And it was heading straight for them.
