Royal Deception
an excerpt

Either way, I imagined myself to be in love with him. Part of the reason I was so ready to believe myself in love with him, I think, was my upbringing. Because I had no experience flirting with boys, his attentions to me were the first. And they were welcome. I loved Adelle like a sister, but it was clear that she was prettier, more intelligent, and kinder, not to mention royal. However, Corbin only had eyes for me. He showered me with attention and little trifling gifts. Being young, I was very disposed to want to please him. I would sneak out of the house at night to see him. I was very good at hiding it, and I don’t think any of the older servants suspected me. I told Adelle, because I wanted to share with someone else that I was in love, and she believed in my love, and encouraged me without directly encouraging my delinquency.
