Synopsis: The Metawars
The year is 1971, and super-powered beings known as Metahumans thrive. The US Government passed a law over a decade ago forcing Metahumans to become state-sponsored super heroes or face imprisonment.
As the curtain opens on our story the Cold War looms over the world, with American and Soviet Metahumans competing in Vietnam and elsewhere.
A mass Metahuman breakout from a high-security Arizona prison plunges the American heroes into a war. The Guardians of New York City must deal with the breakout as well as personal issues, a conspiracy, and the growing threat of the Soviet Union.
Excerpt: The Metawars
On the mental front, Evermind and Brainwave were completely oblivious to the battle raging around them, for the duel they were having rivaled the scale and power of any conventional war! In the battlefield of the mind physical strength has little meaning. What matters is the will of the battlers, the fortitude and determination and concentration. Might is meaningless and metaphors become weapons in their own right.
The arena was of Evermind's choosing, an empty white plane. “No frills, no trappings here,” she said to her opponent. “Just me and you and our our mental powers.” She appeared as she wanted to. Gone was the form-fitting uniform of a Metahuman. In its place was a long white dress, though she still wore her dark glasses. In contrast Brainwave was glad in the armor of a medieval knight, complete with sword and shield.
“Then I shall win,” he snarled. “I have been to this higher place of existence many times, Evermind, and I know its secrets. You cannot even comprehend my power.”
“Oh, I have an inkling,” she smirked.
They dueled, the blank stretch of mind around them warping and twisting at their slightest whims and desires. From around Brainwave massive tanks on spidery legs rose, explosions blossoming from their cannons. The mental plane twisted to defend Evermind, wrapping her in a cocoon of tranquility.
“Fight me, coward!” Brainwave hacked at Evermind's shields with his sword, fragments of the mind tearing away with each slash. “Fight me!”
With a gesture from Evermind Brainwave's legged tanks dissolved and sloshed across the plane like water. In the same motion they wove themselves into a net and trapped Brainwave.
“You lack finesse, Brainwave,” Evermind chided as she drifted towards him, struggling to break his metaphoric bonds. “Power you have, yes, but you don't know how to use it. You're a blunt tool, a crude weapon.” She stood over him, hands on her curvacious hips. “Did you really think you could overcome me?”
“Shut. UP.” The nets around Brainwave erupted outward and he was back on his feet. “You talk too much.”
