Excerpt: Lost Along The Way
I'm standing on the roof, above the spot where the second E should be, looking out over the water, grey and choppy and bleak. The gaudy lights of the Palace Pier straight ahead, beyond the Aquarium. The dark mass of the ruined West Pier off to the right. How did I get here? How did it come to this?
I was a happy guy, fun loving, gregarious. When did I become this snivelling, sad little wreck. I don't even know for sure how I got up on the roof of The Hungry Years Gathering Place. My home. My living room. Until tonight.
Except that's not true. It hasn't been the same since we lost Juliet. Since that night nine months ago when she was thrown down the steep and narrow stairway. Right down there. If I squint, I think I can still see the blood.
