Brief Author Bio: Second time Nano writer, 2008 winner. Had no plot, no clue and no experience last year, and am pretty much on the same page this year. No plot and, since I haven't written since last year, I feel like a newbie all over again. Haven't even taken so much as a peek at what I had written last year. Probably best to leave it that way! |

Synopsis: Suck it in - or suck it up!
The plot, she is still unfolding. Susan has recently discovered that she is middle-aged. She is starting to feel symptoms of that-which-must-not-be-named. She has run out of time - it's too late to become an Olympic hurdler, for example, or an award-winning something-or-another. Her marriage is pretty okay ... but is that enough? Her teenage daughter is an exaggerated replica of herself, and this is not a good thing. What does Susan want to be when she grows up? Should she have an affair? Give it all up and travel barefoot through Peru? Curl up in foetal position and wait for old age to come and get her?
I don't know what she's going to do yet. But I think she might shag a firm young fella.
Excerpt: Suck it in - or suck it up!
Shit! I hope this sarong doesn’t come undone. All I need is to be standing bare-arsed in the middle of Sea Point Main Road. She lets go of her breasts for a second to check the knot in the sarong. All seems secure. A taxi whooshes past, too close to the pavement, its door open, arms and legs protruding. A bunch of young guys hang out the door, whooping and whistling at her.
Oh, great. No one notices when I’m dolled up, made up dressed up. No. then I’m bloody Miss Invisible. Huge appreciation when I walk down Main Road at eight thirty in the morning, wearing no make-up and no underwear. Might it be that men prefer the natural look? If so, I might start growing my pit hair. And my leg hair, for that matter. She musters a smile at herself. It is quite funny, after all, to be walking down Sea Point Main Road, wearing no underwear and the t-shirt you slept in.
Just as well I grabbed that sarong as I left the house, she grins.
You really do need to get it together, woman. This crazy butt-squeezing lifestyle really is too young for you. Should be an executive by now. Someone with money, status, stuff. I should have stuff by now. Not piles and piles of dust-gathering books, but real stuff, like good jewellery, a sleek, shiny car that goes really fast, designer handbags that match your designer shoes. Stuff that other women my age have. And employees. That’s it. I need employees. And awards. A whole list of awards for all sorts of amazing achievements that I can show off on a website somewhere.
