Synopsis: Eleventh Hour
Beneath the surface of the world of today, lies a multi-national conglomerate formed from the bones of ancient cultures. Its mission: to provide a constant source of InspirationTM for artists and writers and anyone in need of ideas. In exchange for periodic Invocation, all customers will receive a Dole of Enlightenment for the improvement of human culture.
All that is about to change.
The board in charge of operations, Mt. Parnassus' Nine Heavenly Muses Inc., decides that the 21st century world no longer deserves access to the Mind of Gods, and will cut off the flow of InspirationTM before the sun rises tomorrow morning. However, if one mortal can traverse the Circles of Tartarus and fulfill the Nine Trials, humanity will have one last chance. Each Muse has chosen a champion to compete in the Eleventh Hour Games, but even the best laid plans of gods and geese are bound to run with hilarity.
A minor muse, Hildy, the patron of slackers, has also presented a champion: deadbeat writer Adam Douglass from the sleepy town of Middlebury, Indiana. In classic tradition, the unlikely must challenge the heavyweights in an epic contest of talents. One problem: Douglass has never even finished a story.
Suddenly the stakes are even higher. If Adam loses, no procrastinator will ever find success ever again. It's hopeless. He must resort to a classic strategy employed by failures the world over: Cheat. With the help of the Three Field Guides, Sims, Bill, and Jane, he may just have a fighting chance.
With a single night to save the world, can InspirationTM be preserved? Can slackers like Hildy and Adam ever succeed? And, most important of all, will the Golden Goose survive to enjoy the victory feast?
Excerpt: Eleventh Hour
Now, of course, and again quite averagely, when Adam writes, he will stop and start like a stuttering Ford Pinto, rusty and not quite road worthy. He’ll cross out words, or erase, or tears pages from his notebook until he finally ends up with less words than he had to begin with. (Though notebook pages do make lovely projectiles.) Despite his best attempts at genius, Adam pays out a lot of his rent money for coffee, but rarely, if ever manages to fill a page with even the most asinine thoughts. He spends his days by the street side window and fantasizes about the day when he will receive his manuscript back in a fat manila envelope with a contract to sign. At his most sublime, he imagines his dream girl, Annalise van Sant from high school, the brilliant and insightful blonde girl with soulful poetry that plunged his heart down to his very toes, and he sees her clutching a copy of his published book and asking him for a coffee. Then, in his fondest daydream, they will sit for hours and discuss his magnum opus, past closing time and into indecent moments of the night when all sensible Hoosiers have long since fallen asleep. And he will read aloud and she will fall into his arms and never leave.
Of course, this entire fantasy is contingent on one thing: that Adam actually finish his hypothetical book and that it turn out to have at the very least a modicum of quality
