She passed the supermarket where she had bought the love-food, foreign in nature to the Chinese, that she had fed to herself and Ellis at the beginning of their union; and the wet market where she preferred to shop, the snakes swimming in Styrofoam buckets at her feet and the turtles poking their forlorn heads back in their shells. Black chickens hung on vicious meat hooks and rice spilled from burlap bags at the feet. She loved the smells, the sound. But not today.
