Excerpt: Patch of Blue

A WARNING
Honestly, my story starts innocently enough. Who knew back then, when I was in preschool, that because I befriended a certain guy, I would eventually be at the center of an incredible scandal years later when I entered high school? Who ever knows these things? All that I knew back then was that during playtime at my preschool, Ben had no friends and looked lonely playing trains by him self. So when he asked me to play with him, I said yes (of course). I should have seen the warning signs!
Trust me girls. If a boy ever asks you to play trains with him, SAY NO. Because inevitably, you guys are going to become friends. Then you’ll become best friends. Then in high school you’ll get hormones and get a crush on him.
Then of course, he’ll get diagnosed with a terminal illness. Because that’s just life.
And even if your two best friends, Clarissa and Esme, tell you that it’s not worth it and they’ve never failed you in the past, you’ll get desperate. And go off and do something really stupid in a frantic attempt to save his life.
This plan will backfire completely on you in many painful ways, culminating not only in the death of your beloved but also in the landing of you into very deep dragon doo – doo.
And that won’t even be the half of it.
So basically, yeah. You’ve been warned.
