Synopsis: The Nintey Ninth War

Miala is young and mostly common Brulan- she was born common, raised common, and educated common. This means the only uncommon thing about her is her gift of magic. And that will be used for a common purpose- healing. That's why she was sent into the midst of the tem-war, a war against the intimidating and formidable tem-sprinns. A war that has been restarting every year for the past ninety nine years. She has been working in the healing tent since last year's war, and she was getting sick of facing all the ugly wounds of war daily. Sick of the smell of herbs, bandages, and blood. Sick of her duty.

Then one day she finds a letter on a soldier close to death. The letter holds some very strange qualities that send her into dead memories, and show her a genius mind lost to the stubbornness of the Brulia society and bloodshed. But before she can linger on that, she notices what the letter was written to show- a secret that may just gain her a future.

“The tem sprinn,” whispered Chancey. “He’s within sight now.” Miala looked over Chancey’s shoulder and saw a truly terrifying sight. What she saw started out as a shadow. Within a few seconds of staring blankly at it, however, it came in to focus. But perhaps that was because it was walking steadily towards them. Whatever the reason was for the growing focus of the tem sprinn, she watched, faceted to the image. It was of something very tall. She couldn’t see the facial features well, but due to the torch it was carrying, she could see that it’s skin was very unusual. It looked a lot like what she knew of tree bark. It wore a turban on its head, and pants, but that was all she could see of it. But the closer it got, the more her unease grew, and it was almost to panic. “This is not right. Everyone knows such magic should be forbidden!” She tried to look into Chancey’s eyes, but couldn’t see them. She hadn’t noticed that they had ventured this far away!

Chancey’s voice came quietly. “That’s because it was once, a long time ago. I onece heard the legend of the tem sprinns…” he was cut off by a sudden roar from the tem sprinn. At least, it seemed like a roar. It was more a yell, but in the ugly, guttural language of the tem sprinns. “We need to get back to the camp!” Chancey cried urgently. He threw Miala over his shoulder and bolted towards the camp. They flew, hearing faint answering calls from other tem sprinns, tem sprinns that Miala guessed to be farther away.

They finally got back in to the camp, after what seemed too long. “They must have done something to the air, to make it thicker to slow me down,” Chancey said to himself. Miala looked around, seeing for the first time the soldiers in the camp looking at the pair as though they were insane. “What were you thinking, walking out of the camp at this time of the day? After dark?” one said. He made a sound of disgust and turned away. Miala blushed and looked down, heading towards the center with the healing tent, staff lodging tents, stables, and armory. She could hear Chancey following her. She felt Chancey touch her arm as they walked past the armory tent. “I’m not going to be able to rest after that,” he told her. “I’m just going to do some work in here.” Miala nodded at him, then walked towards the women’s tent. When she got there, she lay down on her pallet, but she couldn’t rest well. She couldn’t help thinking about her ordeal.
