I for Indigo
an excerpt
The void eats me.
Indigo moved his hands in the air.
The void is so cold!
There was something in front of him. It was looking at him. Indigo did not greet it.
Maybe it will go away.
He tasted the wind.
The thing looking at him did not go away. He tasted the thing. Like greasy winter wrappings. He tried to wipe the taste out of his mouth. Then the thing was bruised, and Indigo was bleeding.
Bleeding from a greasy wrapping that watched!
He slouched toward a light to larboard. It glowed at him and he reached for it, to seize it and take it away with him. It fractured in his hands and sent rays of light dripping to the cobbled street.
Bleeding again, from a light to larboard!
Indigo blinked. The wrapper was rustling, "Holland, Holland. Holland, Holland, Holland." He blinked again. The wrapper was rustling away from him. He reached for it and gripped a slippery leaf, but it tore off in his hand and he sat down to wait.
Holland staggered away from the man collapsed in the street and tried to breathe past the catch in her throat. It was a rather large catch, but she tried anyway, and kept moving away from him as long as she could.
She did not get away from half a dozen thugs to die at the hands of a druggie hobo! she told herself. This was not the death of an heiress whose handmaiden was only apart from her because a homeless oaf slipped piano wire under her jaw!
There was too much wet and not enough air. Like swimming, but no help from water to stay off the floor. Holland dragged the limbs no longer her own until she could not feel them connected to her body, to the laboring chest and the child strapped on its back. That child...!
But though she fought relentless until there was no more strength to fight with, it was not very long before she, too, collapsed in the street, crushing numb hands beneath her. My husband! But she tried again to breathe, and tried again, till she could not try any more.
The night took her, bright. Then the darkness closed with a resounding snap.
"Mama?"
