Excerpt: Mocking the Bonds

A ghost of a woman with an olive complexion lingered near the edge of a rocky outcropping where the sea spray splattered her faded dress with brine and pollution. Her face lacked any sign of mirth and her skin hung to bone like a painter’s cloth. Fatalistic ideas of beauty had led her to this horrible state. However, anorexia was likely the least of her problems.
Laura Niceros’ fists clenched as she stared out a large bay window at the pale shadow that was her sister. “I could not even tell when my twin was killing herself by degrees. What kind of sister am I anyway?” Had using her skills to help others left her family to suffer by extension?
