Synopsis: The Devil in Texas
Texas Independence Jesus Miles (AKA "Tex", "TJ", and "Chuy")--born on March 2, 1836 in Gonzales, Texas--comes of age and struggles with life's unanswered questions. His older brother Dusty was the protagonist of last year's novel, Texas Damn Near Forever.
The novel begins with Tex, approaching 50, contemplating suicide. In this frame of mind, he reviews his life--his parents, his brother Dusty, his friends, his work, and his religious experiences.
Excerpt: The Devil in Texas
He got deeper and deeper into the Baptist form of Christianity, and they pointed to him with pride as a convert. He had tried his hand at preaching a time or two (he wasn’t very good) and even considered becoming a missionary. He raged about the evils of alcohol, dancing, swearing and other sins that shouldn’t be mentioned. If it was possible to get someone to Heaven by annoying the Hell out of them, Tex would have led the pack. And it broke his Mama’s heart.
