Synopsis: Saving December
July 29th, 2007. Joshua Herrin comes into the world. July 29th, 2068. Our world meets Dr. Herrin's.
On that date, Herrin's new plan, an idea of scientific genius, was presented to the entire earth: project ALTER (Adolescents Leading Towards Enhanced Reality). Some are horrified, some are jubilant, but all are fascinated. The project is based on the idea that humans use only ten percent of their brains - why not, Herrin reasons, simply alter people - children, whose minds are easier to mess with - to use more?
Fast forward 13 years, 2081. Project November is perfectly content in the ALTER headquarters. Her brain surgeries have resulted in the ability to read minds. Sometimes she peers into her predecessor's, such as January's, or March's. But she reads nothing but blankness... except for June. His mind is alive with brightly colored images, and words, to her. Words that told her stories, that shaped her dreams. That tell her to run away. But not before saving the future December. It isn't long until November, June, and a shady boy known as Cameron are fighting, not just for all the previous ALTER children, but for the next, who will pay the ultimate price...
Excerpt: Saving December
“You imbeciles!”
It was like a scene from a bad movie – both Taylor and Darin, who had been in the middle of rubbing his eyes, flinched as Dr. Herrin spat the word in their faces, expressions a mixture of remorse and horror.
“I can’t believe this,” the old doctor continued, pacing quickly despite his aging body. “I can’t believe you! We are the number one news story in 5 of the 6 civilized continents! Only that mass-murder in New York is topping us! The penguins and the polar bears are probably taking about us, for crying out loud! We do not have the room to make these kinds of mistakes! It’s the little things, like these, that will burn us down to the ground!”
Taylor, flinching again at every accented word, soon stopped listening to them altogether, and let her wander to the figure in the corner, sandy mop of hair and glasses all that were visible over a pad of paper quivering with the earthquake his pen was bringing. A soft voice would occasionally whisper in an unmistakable British accent what one could only assume he was writing down. “Penguins… polar bears…” he muttered, green eyes practically jumping with energy as his pen thrashed around like a rocker in a mosh pit. She didn’t seem to be the only one; Darin was staring off into his own little world, and Dr. Herrin was absorbed in his tirade. Bevin, however, pink eyes mirroring his sharp grin, as well as Anita, seemed to be watching Davy, the aforementioned mop and glasses, with a great deal of humor.
“- just get rid of you both!” Dr. Herrin, for one or two instants, looked to be either finished or taking a break, panting settling to glare at his charges for a moment.
Bevin took the opportunity to say, “I’m sure this is crucial information for you to learn on your internship. Raymond is so vain he thinks animals know of his genius.”
“One thing I have learned that will be valuable for my stay here,” Davy shot back, removing his eyes and pen from his notes, “is that you, Mr. Haak, are a total prick. And also a very talented surgeon.” His gaze finally met the albino’s. Green and pink, Taylor noticed with a repressed smile. Summer colors. A summer storm, maybe. That seemed to be exactly what came about whenever Davy and Bevin interacted in any way. “There are a few reasons that information will come in handy.”
