Excerpt: Bloodred

Damien
In retrospect, it doesn't seem quite fair that I learned that blood appeals to me—that I actually need it—at the exact same time that I learned that everyone else finds it disgusting. I was just a kid, for Chrissake—but then my kind have never gotten much sympathy.
You know what I mean by “my kind,” right?
Yeah.
Vampires.

Sarah
That was the only time she noticed. My friends—I don't have many, but I have some—saw the band-aids. They wondered why I started wearing long sleeves in winter.
They say I shouldn't cut myself.
They're wrong.
