Excerpt: The Shadow in the Screen
So there I was, in the frozen food section, trying to decide between the Lean Cuisine on sale and the crappy knockoff brand that was cheaper even though it wasn’t on sale, and all of a sudden, there was a sharp pain – the kind you get when you fall and land on your back. I felt myself hit the floor – how embarrassing, I thought, in the middle of the frozen foods section with nobody but a clueless clerk - whose training definitely didn’t extend all the way to collapsing middle aged women – to help me.
Then the world just disappeared. Everything shut out. There was a bright light, and I guess you could say that it was then I knew that this would be a bit more embarrassing than just fainting in the supermarket. It may have been the embarrassment that killed me, quite frankly.
