The College is a secret, and secretive, organisation comprised of some of the best of those rare few born with magical abilities. While offering advanced education, its true purpose lies in the destroying of mysterious, murderous and powerful beings known as Prodigia wherever and whenever they should appear. The consequences of leaving them to exist are too dire to ever permit.

Julian Crux and Nathaniel Knight want to join, but in order to do so must first pass the three entrance exams. The first Julian finds too easy and passes without trouble; for the second he and Nathaniel are sent with their supervisor, Kelly, to investigate a Prodigium attack in Steeple Ashton, a small English village.
What transpires there begins the unlikely friendship between Julian - who considers himself perfect - and awkward, love-struck Nathaniel. Their relationship is thorny, but they both agree absolutely on one thing: the world, mankind, is decayed, rotten; filled with evil, imperfection and sin.
