Excerpt: Little World
In her throne room, Queen Victoria sat upon her throne, her thumb rubbing over the italicized inscription on the locket. The language was old, but not so old that Victoria would have forgotten the meaning behind such words. “The treasure of my heart is my daughter.” Closing her fist around the locket, Victoria jumped to her feet. “Charlotte!”
A girl detached herself from the shadows and came running into the throne room, bowing apologetically. “Yes, Majesty?”
“Has King Richard been informed of our latest guest?” Victoria asked icily.
“King Richard has no mind to speak of,” Charlotte said, dark curls sliding forward as she ducked her head, somewhat shamefully. “He would not know if the sky was blue or if the rain was wet.”
Victoria’s lips curved into a cruel smile. “And so it shall be. He shall remember nothing. Certainly, he should not remember anything of this.” She scowled at the locket still clenched in her hand. “It seems that I have work to do.”
“Majesty?” Charlotte asked breathlessly.
“I have waited a long time for this to come,” Victoria whispered, almost gleefully, under her breath. “It is time to see what her lies have wrought. It is time to see what pity has been shown was ill deserved. Has Princess Jane left yet?”
“Yes, Majesty. Her carriage left not an hour ago,” Charlotte responded.
“Then we will begin,” Victoria replied, turning back to her lady-in-waiting. “And what better woman to start with than the one whose shame lost her the crown?” Her grin deepened. “Queen Regina, herself.”
