Excerpt: Daughter of Moran
The next morning dawned rather sharp and crisp for later summer, and Sky shivered as she got out of bed. Her mother was gone, and she could hear the rhythm of the well-rope being pulled hand over hand through the rusty pulley. She quickly slipped a shift over her head and hurried downstairs to start breakfast, her bare feet making slapping noises on the dirt floor. Sunshine crept in through the window and began to light the room while she rummaged around for a shawl in the chest eside the basket of mending. She could also hear the chatter of the soldiers as they sat on the front step, as they did every morning.
She picked out a loaf of bread Moon had baked yesterday and scraped some interesting blue mold off the cheese, and brought it out to the soldiers. They thanked her, and went back to discussing "those pesky werewolves on the northern forest". Apparently the werewolves were rather territorial, and did not like villagers trespassing on the area they thought of as theirs. 'Fair enough,' she thought. 'They've been here longer than we humans have.' Her thoughts wandered back to the wolf near the spring she had visited yesterday. Maybe he had just been making sure she didn't go too far.
