Synopsis: SIDLER:or Father Nathan's Church of Jesus Christ and the Merry Magdalenes
Nathan Tanner has had the power to "Sidle" between dimensions--to replace himself on different worlds-- for as long as he can remember. Since college he has sidled from life to life, tasting the lives that he never settled down long enough to have. Until one day, as a man in his fifties and placed in great danger he finds himself flung- bodily- to a world that had no version of himself to replace. This is different. He has jumped physically and he finds himself unable to 'Sidle' back to a world more like his own.
The world he finds himself on is one with a very different history than those he is used to. There has been no industrial revolution and the structure of the society has been shaped by entirely different recent history and most importantly has no Judeo-Christian history .
In the last world before his fateful 'Jump', Nathan was posing as a priest and he continues with the ruse only to find an eager and willing group of parishoners. Step by step, at first without real intent, Nathan builds up a church that becomes the envy of the neighboring towns and finally draws the attention of a mysterious stranger.
This stranger shows up and claims to the townsfolk to be a Bishop of the church coming to reestablish contact. To Nathan he admits to being a crosstime traveller who wants a piece of the action.
Nathan starts a journey of discovery to find out the stranger's plans and discovers that his church looms large in the other man's plan.
Can Nathan stop the hostile take-over of the only thing he has ever really accomplished in his life?

The Present
"You've got to be the worst God-damned priest in the world, Father Nathan," St. Stephen said, his voice an angry counterpoint to the cheery buzz of spring in the blossoming orchard.
"Now, see here Stephen, I am the only God-damned priest in this world," said the man in question, then quickly added, "—who should matter to you."
"But your plan goes against your own scripture, Father. It's practically blasphemy."
"Why, you've got no reason to be putting on me so high and harsh, you hear? Remember who taught you those scriptures now, Stephen." Father Nathan attempted a hurt look.
"Please Father, it's St. Stephen." He actually managed the hurt look.
"You remember too, St. Stephen, that it was I who designated you a saint, and as God is my witness, I can change my mind." Nathan's voice rose in high dudgeon and he bit back a sermon.
He didn't have to take this crap from Stephen. Ever since Nathan had given him a title, Stephen had become such a prig. No, that wasn't fair; Stephen had always been a prig.
Why, he even complained about the brothel. The number one money maker in the whole Catholic Church and Stephen had a problem with it morally. God!
