Synopsis: The Spirit Wager
A boy loses his soul to the mahlofs [spirits] in a game of chance; he "escapes" them only to discover that his mother has fallen deathly ill. The only ones capable of healing her are the vanished qengs [spirits], driven out by the mahlofs years ago. But the mahlofs are nothing if not deal-makers, and they have a proposition for their new acquisition...
