Synopsis: Our Four Mothers
Generations ago, four families emigrated to the planet Maroah to create their version of a patriarchal utopia, where women have no rights, but are honored and valued. They are completely cut off from all of earth's evil influence, so by now, girls are not even aware that there's another way to live. Until a teenager named Cady comes across diaries left behind by one of the original colonists, and begins to wonder...and to act.
Excerpt: Our Four Mothers
When Our Four Mothers first came to New Plymouth so many generations ago, their daughters wore white robes. These were supposed to symbolize purity. After only a few weeks, though, they were forced to face reality. With the brownish-red earth of their new home, white robes would not look pure for long. So now we unmarried girls are garbed in robes the exact color of the New Plymouth land, and if it weren’t for the still-white veils covering our hair we would disappear into her entirely.
Our mothers and married sisters, of course, wear robes in any color they choose: cobalt or teal or magenta or amber. This is one decision they are allowed to make unilaterally. The colors of their robes and matching veils may change as their moods change, as their whims change. Our fathers smile gently at the bright, happy spots they make around our homes and in the village.
