Synopsis:
When her beloved father dies, Eleanor Rigby Johnson fears her mother has gone crazy in thinking a hole in the cabinet under the kitchen sink will somehow lead them to him. Rigby, her mom, and her geeky, endearing neighbor Patrick climb in to see for themselves where the strange hole really leads. They are about to discover the ancient truths about true love: it is never wasted, it is always forever, and it is worth any cost to hold, even for the briefest flicker of time.
Excerpt:
“Code red?” Patrick asked, out of breath and starting to sweat from the sheer excitement.
“Yep,” I answered, now trying to keep Jude from slobbering his wet nasty kisses all over Patrick, but Patrick was oblivious.
“Show me. Show me now,” he said. He pushed his glasses up a bit and his brown eyes seemed even deeper in the dark room.
I let go of Jude. “Follow me.” And I led him to the kitchen. After handing him the flashlight and pointing to the cabinet, I instinctively backed away a bit. I thought it best to, well, you know, give him his room. Jude looked up at me and I could swear he pursed his lips in disgust before he peered into the cabinet, his furry face only an inch from Patrick’s.
“NO WAY!” Patrick said. He was on all fours too, with my flashlight in hand and his head almost all the way in the cabinet. I was a little in awe of him right now. He was brave and a geek. I thought it was an either/or thing, that brave and geek couldn’t blend. Maybe it was the deep brown eyes. And how had this fact been lost on me for so long? Okay, focus.
“What do you think?” I kneeled down facing him, hoping he’d tell me some geeky logical explanation that I couldn’t begin to understand so I could laugh and be done with this stupid thing altogether.
“This is not supposed to be here,” he concluded. He backed out of the cabinet and looked me in the eyes. And I saw something past those deep browns that got to me in a new strange way. I saw a flicker of terror.
