Excerpt: Der Birkling / Diary from the future

Diary from the future
Aean 311, 4th day of the second quarter

Today is my birthday. I turned 17. To be precisely, it's the birthday of me and my twin-brother. But this is my diary, so he doesn't matter.
My aunt gave it to me as a present. She told me it was about time I used one, since she had started to write one even as a child. Frankly, I don't see the point. Everyone can record anything with a mecodir. And the DNA-coded password of that certainly is more secure than written words.
I'm only using this diary now, because I'm annoyed and bored. There is a shard-blizzard outside, which scrambles all transmissions. So there is no television and no communication with anyone outside of this base, let alone with Earth. The storm will be over in an hour or so, but I want to talk to someone right NOW.
My aunt told me, I should use this thing in any way I wish. I must have looked quite clueless then, because she felt the need to explain it to me. But of course I knew what a diary was. I'm not stupid, you know. It's basically a logfile where everything that happens is recorded. The difference is that it doesn't happen automatically like on a computer. Instead you have to go through the trouble and write down everything manually, before you forget it. However, my aunt pointed out that this means it is more flexible, too. I don't have to stick to a certain format, I can leave things out if I want to forget them or don't consider them noteworthy (like my brother) and I even could write stuff that isn't true at all.
