Brief Author Bio: Why Nano? Well, for one, I do not have enough spare time, so I just decided to cram this in and hope I make it out breathing. I have always loved reading and writing, stealing books from my older brother's shelf since I was young. Now I have little time because of AP classes in high school, so I make us stories in my head and write them down. I was wandering around the internet one day in 2008 when I happened upon nanowrimo. Though I participated in the '08 wrimo, I did not really focus on it, and my wordcount showed that. This year I have an outlined novel and a schedule to work off. Not to mention plenty of tea. |

Synopsis: The Building of Facades
The world is built on facades, masks that people construct and wear out of fear, confusion, ambition, and all the other emotions that exist but cannot be identified. Some people don’t realize they wear the masks; others carefully build upon their new identity.
Regan Barnes. Aubrey Tomlin. Basia Nowaki. Tyler Blackburne. Marc Nazarov. Konrad Reschke. Judson Cotterill. Elvira Coello. Elise Lishman. David Rossett.
Ten students compile the eighth grade class of Striver Academy, a school for the gifted. A school for the “crazy”, Judson calls it. A school of people who depend on their facades. Everyone knows what lies beneath the masks, but no one peels off the false image. There is a simple reason for that; there is a rule.
Never attack a façade. Never uncover the real person. Even if you know what is underneath, respect their privacy.
Striver is a place where mind games are the way of survival. They know others have found their facades; they know what is under others’. But everyone obeys the rule.
Until Joel Onslow arrives.
Joel notices the masks. Joel learns the rules of the society. Joel decides to break the rules, and suddenly one girl is left without a safety net.
When you believe all you can do is fall, but discover you have already hit the bottom, there is only one choice. The one you choose.
Excerpt: The Building of Facades
Finally, Elvira rinsed both the brushed and hung them on their hooks. As the last part of the ritual was finished she began to cry. Salty tears mixed with the water where they would run down the drain and mingle with her blood. She cried the tears she couldn’t cry that summer, doubling over in grief for her lost innocence; grief for her lost life; grief for the sacrifice she was forced to make. And even though Elvira knew that Regan in the stall next to her and David in the shower across from her were brutally stripped of their childhood just like here it only made the sobs more violent. And now they were sobs for the unjust world they lived in. a world that dealt the worst cards to the best people.

The three friends nodded at each other. Grabbing their bags they started up the stairs to where the light shone through the small crack in the door. Regan grabbed the doorknob and turned around to face her friends. She opened the door to face the light.
David, Regan, and Elvira walked through the door and into the building, their masks slipping right into place.
