A Day at the Office
an excerpt

This learning how to do self-defense was a good idea, just wasn't the person she really wanted to learn it from. What was wrong with going to the gym and learning from some guy there? Those people were trained to do it from somewhere so they were capable of training her. But no...she got the cranky body guard. What was it with threatening someone and then coming to 'help'. She rubbed the back of her head where it had connected with his nose. That was a move that she had learned before but didn't think it would hurt that much.

Valentine pulled a bottle of water out and drank half of it before sitting down with her back against the wall. A glance over and Jackson was still holding his nose, wiping at some blood that had trickled down. Ooo, drew blood.

"So how long as we supposed to be doing this?"

He glanced over. "Until you get it right."

The tired secretary scowled. "What isn't right about it? Because I don't have a black belt and know how to kill a person in five different ways with a toothpick or something?"

Wow, if there was a way to kill a person with a look, she would probably be dead. Granted there might be a way, just not known to man.

"Dr. Banithshee has entrusted me to at least train you in defense against the people that are targetting the other beings. You need to take this seriously."

"I am taking it seriously. Idiot, my boss was attacked and both you and that Kitsune were nothing but trouble since you came into the office and busted down the door so I don't see how I'm wondering what practical things you're teaching me that aren't being taught in whatever mercenary or commander or whatever school of being a big ol' ass is a bonus to your job." Grr, she didn't need this, as if dealing with egotistical creatures weren't enough she had to deal with him. Gah, she wanted to deal with the vampire/ghoul argument again. At least they calmed down after a while.

There was a small growl and she wondered if something had come in but it was coming from him. He stormed over and grabbed her arm, almost where he had before and she couldn't help but wince at the pain as it shot up into her arm. That was getting real old. She brought up her knee sharply and nailed him right where it would really hurt.

"Listen, you...." His expression froze as the words faded off into a small whimper before dropped down, hands cradled over his groin.

"Grab me one more time like that again and I'll shove them so up your throat that people will really say that you have two heads on your shoulders. We're done now."

She walked away, leaving him laying on the floor while she went down the two flights of stairs to go into the office. She had phone calls to make and at least then she would feel that things were a little more productive than dealing with some dickhead with an attitude.
