PROLOGUE
Rain poured onto the brightly lit streets and the reflections of neon lights rippled in the puddles covering both lanes of the road. A car drove by; it sent up a spray that would have drenched the woman standing by the curb, had she not been wet through already. She was wearing a light tank top, a skirt and no shoes, an ensemble completely unsuited to the fall season. If anyone had actually spared this apparent party girl a glance, they would have seen that she was unnaturally muscled for having such a light frame, that she didn’t shift beyond tracking occasional movements with her eyes, that her arms and legs were hairy, and most noticeably that her skin was crisscrossed by a network of scars that ran over her entire body but was concentrated on her hands, back and face.
She was standing in front of a large building. Abandoned for years, closed to the public, but not officially slated for demolition, it was still gaudily ornamented and painted in bright colours. The castle in New Orleans seemed to be deserted at first glance, and it was true that there was not a single, living human there. The soaked woman pushed a few strands of her short, bristly hair out of her face and looked at her watch.

CHAPTER 1
If you’re reading this because you’ve had experiences like mine, my advice is this. Don’t run. You won’t get anywhere. They’re everywhere, and the odds are they’re better in your town than elsewhere. And if they aren’t, the bad ones will just follow you. The best of them won’t help regular humans, not until they get to know you.
My name is Jake. Jake Hoffman. This is a story about what happened to me. It’s also a story about the creatures I’d come to call my friends… eventually. Does it have a happy ending? Well… that really depends on what you call happy.
