I turned to him. “What did you see?” I asked.

“Same thing I always see, my girl—just the person before me. ‘Cept this time I think you’ve seen it, too,” he answered me frankly.

“…yeah. Guess…I’d hoped it was different this time,” I told him.

“It could be. It’s never certain, you know that.”

“What happened to people never change?”

Devlin looked at the door. “Sometimes they do. They just need a reason.”

I looked at the door, a hundred scenes playing out in my head from my past. “A pretty damn good one, I’d think.”

“And those are hard to come by,” he added.
