Fire Knights (title subject to change)
an excerpt
“Ne, Xeryzvyn,” a voice in the darkness cooed. Gentle snored greeted the rough, inhuman tone. It snorted. “Ezvrynex?” It asked. One of the snorts switched to snorts, then to demonic grumbles.
“Kryexyn...” It greeted.
“Ezvrynex,” The first voice verified.
More grumbles. “Xeryzvyn? Xeryzvyn!”
Growls and click greeted the shouted name and the remaining snores vanished. This voice was softer, more feminine. “What do you two want?”
The first one, Kryexyn, cleared its voice. “He’s awake.”
“So? I’m awake too now, thanks to you.”
“No, no, he’s awake!”
Here, the second voice, Ezvrynex, interjected; “You mean...?”
“Yes!”
The female one, Xeryzvyn, clicked in glee. “Ah, now there’s a good reason for us to be awake.” Two more clicks of amusement joined in.
They all began chattering at once.
“We need to go find him.”
“But we know where he is!”
“No, not him, the other him!”
“Oh, that him!”
“What about the other-other him?”
“We have to find him, too!”
“No, the other-other him is a her, you dolts!”
“A her? Are you certain?”
“It can’t be a her, the last one was a her! He said the other-other one would be a him!”
“Yeah, he did!”
“But it’s a woman this time, too. And besides, that’s just the other-other. The other is still a him; the other is more important than the other-other.”
The two males continued bickering with rapid speech. Eventually, Xeryzvyn grew bored of this. “Shall we, siblings?” The third asked loudly, ending the argument. Snarls greeted. Teeth gleamed in the darkness. “Let’s go then!”
