Excerpt: Fey (working title)
When Fey reached the kitchen, the eyes of her younger siblings lit up. Interrupting each other frequently, they both rushed to speak.
“Fey! A kitten!“
“Is it ours? Can I name-“
“Where’d it come from? Can I keep it for-“
“-her Princess Whiskers? Please!”
“That’s a stupid name! Let’s-“
“Is not!”
“-Commander Spacetron!”
And from later in the story...
“What do you want? You really don’t want to kidnap me! I-I-I’m a dreadful slob, and I’m really bad at math!” said Fey, while thinking of how best to go about attacking the breaker-and-enterer.
Just as Fey was deciding to elbow her assailant in the eye and run upstairs, the woman spoke again, “Fey, you really needn’t be afraid. I would have spoken to you earlier but I heard those children you live with, so I did a quick dissescence and left the cat to explain the noise. Don’t worry, it’s hypoallergenic.”
“You did what?” queried Fey, pulling her eyebrows down in confusion despite herself.
“I didn’t think the concept would be all that hard to grasp, but ok. You see the cat over there?” asked the woman, pointing toward the small, white kitten busily attacking dust motes, “Well, I left it here earlier.”
Fey exclaimed in exasperation, “Not the cat! You dis-something or othered?”
“Oh, that! Dissescence. It’s disappearing, followed by reescencing somewhere else—that’s appearing. I suppose I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, though. You’ll learn all about that in good time. Oh! How could you let me forget? I’m Anastasia Gwendolyn. You may call me Anna. And, of course, I know your name already, Fey Winter,” spoke Anastasia, releasing her grip on Fey’s hand to proffer her own for a hand shake.
