Synopsis: Control
All Charlie's parents want for her is to be happy and move on from her past.
Unfortunately, the past isn't ready for Charlie to move on.
Several years ago, Charlie was kidnapped, abused and told she wouldn't survive to see her next birthday. But then her captor made a mistake.
Now living in a new town where no one is supposed to know what happened to her, Charlie should be trying to come to terms with what happened those two weeks she was held captive. She thinks she is doing relatively well until her new friends decide to play an innocent joke on her.
Not knowing what happened to her in her past, Charlie's friends trigger the survival mechanism that she has built up to protect her from her memories and nightmares. But unfortunately, when the fears are too strong for Charlie to control, she relives those memories that she'd rather stay buried and violently lashes out.
When the night ends and the sun comes up, will Charlie be able to distinguish the fine line between memories and the present? Or will she drown in her silent fears?
Excerpt: Control
It's clear Sam's visit surprises them, too. Which means after we eat, I won't be a part of their conversation.
I will, however, be the conversation itself.
In the back of my mind, I'm annoyed. And I feel a shallow vein of resentment. But I honestly can't be bothered by talk. Words mean nothing when there are actions that speak much louder.
