Questions and Answers - A More or Less Catholic Reflection on What It All Means
an excerpt
Zounds, what is the point of all this?
First, there is much to ponder. The surface is barely scratched. However, we now have a sort of Tinker Toy framework. Using the medium of Questions and Answers, we will see if we can’t flesh out this skeletal construct such that the answers inform the framework, and the framework either is strengthened by the addition of flesh and muscle, or it simply falls apart. If it falls apart, then this writing will fall far short of the 50000 required to “win” NaNoWriMo. However, that would be a most unlikely occurrence. Thanks for staying this long. It’s about to get interesting.
In the following, I believe the Bible to be a reliable source of truth regarding God and His Plan for Salvation. There will be no time spent defending the Bible. It is to be taken at face value. As The Word Of God.
Chapter 3 – Questions
Disclaimer: As the coherence of this effort breaks down under the pressure of being approximately 21,000 words behind where I need to be by the end of today, there may be some rambling going on here. Think of it as an attempt to bring order from chaos.
Question 1: “I understand God on an intellectual level. However, applying what I understand and believe to a relationship is difficult. How do I learn to love God?
Answer 1: The short answer is that by yourself you cannot know God on a level where you can say you actually Love God. As the preceding meditation on the Universe suggests, God is an imponderable mystery, existing outside our frame of reference.
We can only know and love God in response to his call to know him. The entire Old Testament, among other things, recounts God’s direct intervention into our Time/Space. God knows us, and wants us to know and to love him. For this to happen, he has to reveal Himself to us. That is the purpose of revelation. Revelation is first and foremost God’s direct presentation of himself to Humanity.
As the Old Testament can attest, this presentation was not well understood by anyone except a fragmentary few. Even people that witnessed first hands those things we would call miracles, such as the parting of the Red Sea, in a matter of weeks or months were laying aside this awe and wonder, perhaps thinking up mundane phenomena to explain away the miracles, etc.
We only know what we can apprehend, and we can only truly apprehend what we can interact with. The whole economy of salvation works within this Universal Framework. So, even the newly freed Israelites barely escaping Pharaoh's wrath could turn away from this activity of God seen by their own eyes. Why? Because they just really couldn’t comprehend what happens when God steps in. The entire Old Testament shows man failing again and again and again to get it.
We find it impossible to connect with that which is outside our frame of reference. Hello. It’s outside our frame of reference. It is not measurable. Our fallen nature cannot ponder fully what is revealed to us on its own. Even God’s dabbling here and there in a direct manner in History only had temporary effect.
Yet, we are told this is all part of God’s plan.
Remember, the Universe was created and Time/Space began. The purpose of this creation is to evidence God. The mystery of Creation points outside itself. But it points where there are no maps, no eye witnesses. The Universe Points to a Presence self identified as “I Am.” Beyond this proclamation of existence, we are powerless to comprehend.
The answer? Jesus Christ.
God, just like breathing his spirit into lifeless clay and bringing Adam to life, breathed his Word into the Universe, and Jesus Christ was born to walk among us.
If you read the four Gospels, many many things standout. Among them is that Jesus is a paradox. He is Almighty God, Poor Man, Suffering Servant, Prophet, and anointed King, The Messiah. But, he existed in Time/Space in our Universe, ate and drank, talked with, taught, etc. historical human beings. Our undeserved Gift from God is his own person of Jesus the Christ, Son of God, Son of Man. This is our path to know God. Jesus, the person that existed on the planet in a finite space and time. Our Way to Know God.
To learn to love God, you have no other option, and no better choice than to learn to love Jesus. The Universe has been created and set up to lead to just this point, this fact. We are material and spiritual, we are created, we cannot apprehend our place in this creation on our own, and even with such evidence as The Entire Universe and incidents in the past of Direct Intervention, we don’t understand, we basically cannot understand on our own, at least not for very long.
We are called by our Creator, by his Creation and by our very Being to know I Am, to know BEING, and we must respond. Our souls cry out for this intimacy with God. All myth, all great stories, are stories of Loss. We have lost our intimacy with God by the wrong exercise of Free Will. We do not know what it is we lost, but we know, yea verily we know deep in our non-verbal being, something is missing.
We do not, however, posses the ability to do this on our own. We have been given all of this creation, and the 2nd person of the Blessed Trinity, that we may have the mysteries to ponder in a manner that is at least accessible, that we can at least begin to grasp. To Know, We must Believe. Jesus is the Way, The Truth and The Life.
Thomas said to him, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
John 14:5-7
