Excerpt: Lost

It was like a movie when Mikey woke up.
Despite the ugly, peeling yellow walls, everything seemed white. Skin and sheets and light all emanating the same pale glow. Mikey turned over in the bed to see Frank’s bare back, the contours and rivets of his spine illuminated further by translucent skin and soft air. The noises in Mikey’s ears, the commotion of nearby traffic as the city awoke and Frank’s soft, lullaby breathing beside his ear.
Mikey reached out, feeling along the dusty hardwood floor for the plastic frames of his glasses, wiping the lenses on the sheet before pushing them onto his face. He glanced at his watch, the one Gerard had given him for his fourteenth birthday, noting that it was eight thirty. He still had a while before he’d have to get up for work so removed the frames from his face and turned onto his stomach. Frank tossed over towards him and hooked a leg over his waist, one arm coming up to curl around his ribs in slumber. The moment, so golden and perfect, was destroyed by Gerard’s voice.
“You filthy whore.” voice, so full of poison and hatred, rang out In Mikey’s ears, furrowing his eyebrows. “Desperate little slut.”
