Synopsis: A Flicker in the Night

Thirteen year old Jace Lockenn has pretty much all he can ever want. Too bad he wants more. He goes to an AMAZING school; the AFSI, or in other words, "The Academy for Special Individuals." What is so special about these students? They each have been given a "gift" at one point in their life. This school trains them to use their gift to their full potential. Jace was given the gift of being telekenetic, so he is put in the Physical gift category, like most of the "cooler" kids, as apposed to the Mental gift guys, which is stereotyped as girly considering the group mostly consists of girls. He has insomnia, which results to him wandering unauthorized around the dark halls of the dormitory at night. Every night he sees a light flicker on, followed by heavy breathing and footsteps. One night he feels outrageous, so he decides to catch the lurker. He soon finds out the mysterious flicker is nothing what he expected. In fact, that person would probably change his life forever.

Excerpt: A Flicker in the Night

I shut my eyes, so close to sleep I could touch it, when I heard a large crash outside our dorm room.
My eyes flung open. I jumped out of bed, trying to stay light on my feet so I would not wake the guys. I slid on my tennis shoes, and went running towards the door. I slid into the hall, staying pressed against the wall, careful not to be heard or seen. I waited to see any sign of movement.
I heard a groan from the floor about twenty feet away from me. Just after, a light from an open door streamed into the hall. I ducked in a ball, less likely to be seen. My eyes peeked out from over my knees.
The light soon faded as a door slammed. A lit candle carried by a dark figure walked down the hall towards the groan. The candle was then shown on the dark figure on the ground. The shape of a pale, skinny girl with dark brown eyes and dark brown hair was in a bundle on the ground. She had fallen. I expected the person holding the candle to help her up, but I was wrong.
The person grabbed the young girls arm, jerking her to her feet. The small girl winced, holding back any sound.
The candle then shown in the other direction so I could not see the girl anymore. It started to move down the hall, so I followed it. I stayed behind as a door opened. Then, I peeked into the small window of the door.
A large woman was the candle holder. She blew out the candle and set it on a counter by a desk. The room they were in looked to be an office. She was still holding the girl’s arm.
The woman threw the girl onto the ground harshly. I stared in shock. The girl didn’t say a thing, she just used all of her strength to stand up again. She peered out from the dark hair that hung over her face like curtains. She was holding back tears.
“Do you know what could’ve happened if someone had heard you? DO YOU?” the woman roared, towering over the girl. The girl nodded.
The woman seemed to be calming down, or so it looked. Out of no where the woman swung her hand across the girl’s cheek, the girl crying out in pain. She crumbled onto the ground sobbing.
“You weak girl!” the woman yelled. The girl wiped her tears, looking up to the woman, biting her lip.
My hand wrapped around the door knob, determined to race into the room to save the innocent girl. But my hand just couldn’t turn it. I knew how much trouble I’d be in. Was it worth it?
The woman threw her arm back, prepared to hit the girl at her feet once more. I closed my eyes, not able to watch. Another scream of pain came from the room.
I couldn’t take it any longer. I let go of the door knob and walked limply to my dorm, away from that torture. As I entered my room, I could barely hear one last scream of the poor girl. And then everything went silent. I somehow felt peace after all that I had seen. It was hardly fair. I, a horrible, self absorbed bully, laid in my soft, comfortable bed, while an innocent girl was humiliated and hurt to the point of tears.
I shook my head. Who was I to pity a girl I had never met? I directed my thoughts to my girlfriend Brandi as I had done the night before. Her gorgeous blue eyes and long blonde hair shown beautifully in my thoughts. She was mine. I knew her. She was the only girl I should ever pity, I decided.
