Synopsis: Trader's Honour

At the age of fifty-eight, Amandra Bisumar has laid claim to many firsts: Miran’s first female member of the Interplanetary Trader Guild and the first Trader from backward Miran to make it to the Guild’s exclusive judges’ bench. She has more nano-patches than all her peers put together. She’s fair, tough and professional, but she’s afraid of retiring alone. Many years ago, fears of her family’s disapproval of foreigners made her refuse a proposal from her only ever soul mate Ydana Ezmi. These days, they’re uneasy colleagues, their past relationship never mentioned.
Rogue Mirani politician Nemedor Satarin wants to pull Miran out of its rut, and Amandra, from the city’s privileged nobility, is firmly within his range of attack. Amandra is never one to shun a heated debate, but the more she hears of his plans to bring Miran to the front of the interplanetary technology race, the more she becomes intrigued. The more she argues with this charismatic man, the more her heart warms for him. He wants to re-create the hyper-intelligent space-age people who founded the city. Her family and Ydana warn her of Nemedor’s genetic manipulation plans, but a lifetime spent pushing boundaries and fighting prejudice has made her immune to warnings. That is, until she discovers how these plans destroy her business and her extended family.

‘First time in the city?’ she asked.
‘Not the first time, but I haven’t been here for a while. The place has changed a lot.’
She smiled, counting out the pearls I’d passed her, and, apparently satisfied, dropped them in the tray under the counter. ‘Hasn’t it? It’s great. We’re getting a lot more customers.’
‘Do you get many Traders here?’ _Like Iztho or Rehan Andrahar_.
‘We do get some. They’re all starting to come back now we no longer under occupation.’
‘Miran never _occupied_ Barresh.’ The back of my head glowed as the fairness module suppressed an angry comment. The Barresh council had _asked_ for Mirani assistance in getting rid of the pirates and other organised crime.
‘Oh. Of course not.’
There was an uneasy silence as she filled the glass and put it before me.
‘Actually, I’m looking for someone. Two people.’
‘Are you now?’
‘I was wondering if either of them has come in here or if you would know where they are.’
She shrugged. ‘What’s their names?’
‘Rehan Andrahar, or his brother Iztho.’
Her eyes went wide. She leaned over the bar and side in a low voice, ‘Lady, I don’t know about you, but I value my life. If you value yours, you’ll never mention those names in this city again.’
