Andrew gulped nervously as he looked up at the lights in the operating theater. He’s never liked doctors, especially when they were playing with alien technology. He looked over at the table on the left. On it, shining with a chrome finish, was a neural interface that would be implanted into his brain. Andrew was one of the few chosen for this procedure. He never excelled at physical activities such as sports, but his intelligence was high, his perceptions quick, and his reflexes just as fast. It also helped that his parents were rich and influential members of their corporation and were able to bribe their way past whatever other hopeful sons and daughters would have kept their only child from what they saw as his destiny.
Andrew took another deep breath as a doctor placed a mask onto Andrew’s face. He thought that he heard the doctor say something about counting his heartbeats, but Andrew’s mind was elsewhere. He thought once more about the irreversible surgery that would grant him nigh immortality. There was a very low failure rate with the Jovian technology, but failure would mean irreversible damage. He would be reduced to a drooling vegetable. Andrew would rather be jettisoned from an airlock than to suffer such a fate.
Andrew’s eyes drooped as the anesthesia started to take effect. He might never again know what it means to feel human, but in exchange he would have power rivaling that of the gods themselves. He began to smile as he drifted away from consciousness.
