Synopsis: Journeys to THE IMPOSSIBLES: Three Perilous Adventures with Cassandra Farnsworth
On a whim, world-famous explorer and author Cassandra Farnsworth mails letters to fellow voyagers asking for underwriter recommendations the dream adventure of her lifetime: an expedition to The Impossibles. These five locations are just that – impossible to reach. One is a flat-topped rock buffeted by brutal winds and waves in the North Atlantic, its foggy plateau only reachable by a 4,000 foot climb up sheer cliffs. Another constantly changes location. A third disappeared (or did it?)
Since no one has ever returned from a trip to an Impossible and lived to tell about it, Cassandra holds hope for funding her three-person expedition.
One rainy April morning in 1961, Cassandra answers a knock on her door and finds Plethora Smith, dressed in a pink Coco Chanel suit. A matching pillbox is perched on her blonde bubble cut. Plethora is everything Cassandra is not – petite, curvaceous and fashionable. She looks like a Welcome Wagon lady.
Wrong. Plethora “call me Pleth” is the new owner of Smith and Sons, manufacturer of USA’s finest sporting equipment. She makes an offer Cassandra can’t refuse. She will fund the journeys to the three Impossibles -- money is no object. Pleth will hire top scientists, shipbuilders, adventure gear designers, whatever it takes to manufacture never-before-invented equipment, and Cassandra will be the first to use and write about it.
There’s only one catch: perky Pleth wants to come along. Cassandra knows she’ll never have another opportunity like this; she finally agrees.
Cassandra hires a third party, the renowned Dario Valenti. Cassandra and Dario, both twenty-six, are children of famous explorers. She hasn’t seen him since they were 12 years old.
Dario joins the two women on the Isle of Lewis four months later. From here, they begin their voyage to the first Impossible, Rockwall Island.
