Synopsis: Sleep and the City

The story is somewhat autobiographical, and is based off of a series of interconnected dreams which I, Jacky, have had for the past year or so. They tell the story of Joan, a 24-year-old camerawoman, who lives in a city in which nothing makes sense. It is presented as a dream log, with the anonymous narrator, who becomes Joan in her sleep, questioning and interpreting the dreams through commentary while awake, and Joan herself experiencing the dreams, and simply narrating them objectively.

Excerpt: Sleep and the City

I could not help but think to myself: Who was Joan? Why was I no longer myself? Where exactly was this city? Why did it seem familiar to me? It could possibly have been my occasional day trips to New York, but I could tell, this city was not New York. There was just a different feel to it. No grimy subways, no pigeons to worry about (and also, no pigeon droppings to worry about), fewer crowds, and an air of comfort and ease filled the streets. That was very unlike New York, a city filled to its very brim with people rushing about, caring not about anything but themselves and their own schedules, emitting energies of rudeness and worry into the atmosphere. This city wrapped itself around me like a big warm blanket, familiar, comforting, yet unbelievably immense. I could tell that even after just one visit, it was my home.
