She returned home to N|ehna’s hut, but her stepmother was with Ogam!u, and only Ndelah was there. Having no else to complain to, she spoke to her stepsister.
“Sister, what does one do when one’s love is unrequited?”
Ndelah thought about it for a moment. “I’m not sure,” she said after a minute. Then, after a pause, she added, “What’s ‘unrequited’ mean?”
Mehne sighed. “I love him, but he does not love me.”
“Oh!” said her eleven-year-old sister in surprise. “You are in love!”
“Yes,” Mehne explained. “What would you do?”
“How old is he?”
“A little over twenty,” Mehne estimated.
“That’s too old for me,” Ndelah said.
“What if you were my age?”
“If it’s unrequited, you mean?” Ndelah asked. “Hmmmm, I guess I’d give up. I mean, there are lots of cute guys out there.”
“It’s no only about looks!” Mehne cried, alarmed by her sister’s nonchalant suggestion. “Though he is unbelievably handsome. No – I think he is my alkan!okan|u!”
“Oh I see,” Ndelah muttered, adding after a pause, “What’s an alkan!okan|u?”
“It’s like the other half of your alkan!oka. The one person in all this world who will make you whole.”
“Oh, so you kind of have to marry him,” Ndelah realised. Mehne nodded. “That’s really unfortunate,” the younger sister said.
“Yes,” Mehne agreed with a sigh. “It is.”
