Synopsis: The Apothecary
Lucas Villeiston is one of the four noble children of the Villeiston family. Many envy and fear their power, wealth, and influence, which may have led to their downfall. One night their mansion was ransacked and all were killed except for Lucas who barely escaped. Because of the “lack of evidence” and the constant hostility towards the Villeiston family none of the murderers were brought to justice. Lucas pursued a career in medicine and went to medical school to become a surgeon-apothecary. However, the school does not know him as Lucas Villeiston, they know him as Vihne Augustyne.
Lucas completely changed his identity to get away from the stigma of his family name. After a few years Vihne becomes renowned in the medical field for his expertise. He owns a small hospital in which he handpicked all of the staff himself, though he is sometimes asked to lend his medical skill at bigger hospitals. He also owns a medicine shop that holds bottles and jars of herbs and medicines, looks like a typical medicine store, but in the back is where he keeps drugs for special occasions. But they’re not kept in jars and bottles; they are living and breathing beings. They are there to help him exact his revenge.
The essences of the drugs were changed to living beings by a supernatural woman named Rinncage von Hayn, but she asks Vihne to do something in return. For her services Vihne is to bring back the souls of the murderers so that she can punish them by making them Verlorene Seelen [German for Lost Souls] for she is Der Großartige Richter [The Grand Judge]. She also tells him that if Vihne abuses his power then she will give him the same fate as his family’s attackers. After awhile Vihne’s underground drugs are beginning to be rumored about, but are only known about by a select few. Even so the police keep a firm eye on Vihne, while Vihne must stay one step ahead of them and keep his eye on the drug lords that run ruthless gangs in the back allies of London. Together with his assistant and the personified drugs, he travels around London seeking revenge on those who destroyed his innocence, as well as offering his services to those who dare to sign his contract that would result in death if broken.
Excerpt: The Apothecary
...“Ah, I believe I am starting to understand now,” Vihne replied, thinking how he hoped this incantation and this idea will work, and work smoothly.
“Do you still have doubts?” she asked. “Because we can stop right now and forget this entire process.”
“No! No, I do not wish to stop, I was only…thinking, please continue. I look forward to the outcome of this.”
Crinne stayed silent, just watching as Rinncage opened the bottles and began muttering something in Latin. She took some essence of each drug and smeared it onto the floor, her eyes closed, still murmuring her spell though with each movement the volume of her voice increased a little. It looked as if the floor began to bubble, like it was boiling, or melting.
“Is she going to destroy the floor?” Crinne asked, concerned.
Vihne chuckled at Crinne’s question. “Is that all you are thinking about right now? And even if the floor is destroyed we will replace it.”
Crinne opened his mouth to protest but his attention quickly returned to the floor and Rinncage. She swirled her hand around each spot where a different drug had been then raised her hand up and spread her fingers out as wide as they would go, and one-by-one a being grew. They were of adult size but were naked and huddled in a fetal position. Ether was the first to awake; she looked about the room, her eyes locking on Vihne, then Crinne. She finished creating the beings then asked her Wormwood to bring her the clothes bag she had brought.
“Now, we must get all of you clothed,” Rinncage said to no one in particular. She gave them each an outfit and they all dressed quickly. Crinne looked away for he wanted to give them their privacy. He is a very modest man, much due to the method of his raising. Vihne is absolutely fascinated, they were all so gorgeous, he is also in awe that the incantation worked with no errors whatsoever, true Rinncage had her Wormwood with her, he knew it would work, but did not know how well, and he now has his own. He took Opium’s hand into his own and he looked up at Vihne with a quizzical look upon his face. ...
