Minneapolis was all barebone trees and robin’s egg skies from the train window. A lone maple burned with orange leaves, shaking and bent in the wind, and then disappeared as the train descended into a tunnel.

“Did you get enough to eat?” asked Jamie, suddenly smiling over at her, closing his laptop.
“Yes, thanks.”
“I already asked her that,” Kathy looked across the table.
“Sorry.” Jamie said, picking a few stray potatoes off his plate.
“It was really good.” Charlotte told Jamie.
Jamie grinned. “We made the sausage from scratch last night.”
“I already told her that.”
“It’s wheat gluten.”
“I already told her that.” Kathy glowered.
