Brief Author Bio:

Mechanical engineer who spends far too much time reading and writing technical reports and doing fluid systems analyses. Trying to get back into writing something substantial and not related to work.

Synopsis: Foundations

This is a story of the Marauders, Lily, and Snape in their first year, getting to know one another and building the foundations of their friendships. The goal is to make them all into real people, with passions and beliefs, hopes and dreams and fears. To paint a picture of the Wizarding world in the early 1970s, and how Voldemort found a foothold to exploit.

There isn't some great evil lurking at the end of the school year, no enemy to face down, no mortal peril to avoid. Just a group of kids growing up and figuring out how they fit into this world that their parents have laid out for them and how to take that and make it their own.

Excerpt: Foundations

"Have you ever read the Sherlock Holmes books?" James asked. Pete blinked, obviously not keeping up with James' train of thought.

"I've heard of them," Pete replied.

"I suppose that's better than nothing," James said. "Look, so you're going to be Watson, okay? And Black is Moriarty, of course. So I want you to keep your eyes open so we can figure out what Black is up to."

Pete blinked at him a few more times. "What?" James resisted the urge to sigh in exasperation.

"We're investigating him, Pete. You get to be my assistant, Watson. And I'm Holmes, of course. And Black is my arch-nemesis, the despicable Moriarty. Understand?" James asked.

"Not really..." Pete replied. James did sigh this time.

"Look, Pete, just play along, right? I'll do most of the work, you just need to watch my back," James told him.

"Um, I guess so. Did you need anything else?" Peter asked. James shook his head.

"You're a good man, my dear Watson. Keep it up," James said before leaving Pete to his boring book.
